Young Architects Embrace The Power Of An Online Identity

Over 60% of Young Architects Believe An Online Portfolio is Vital

.ARCHI recently surveyed over 5,000 members of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and found that the majority over 60% of future young architects and designers feel that, having an online portfolio or website is a vital tool for their careers.

As the company that powers the .ARCHI domain extension which is uniquely reserved for the architectural community, in 2015 we partnered with the AIAS to help members and future architects build their online presence. The AIAS is an independent, nonprofit, student-run organization dedicated to providing unmatched progressive programs, information, and resources on issues critical to architecture.

Together, we recently launched a survey to gauge the importance of having an online presence to young architects. We asked over 5,000 members across more than 50 national chapters through an online survey to share their opinion on having an online presence and the results were very interesting.

Overwhelming  young architects see the web as a core tool for their careers. The passing of the generational baton in architecture is clearly happening online as to how architects promote themselves and their work. And the survey results to prove it.

Do young architects feel having an online identity will help their career.

64% of architecture students believe having an online presence will be helpful in their career. Just over 30% are on the fence which shows that more education is needed especially as 56% of all hiring managers are more impressed by a candidate’s online portfolio than any other personal branding tool.

What future young architects consider to be the main benefits of a personalized online identity.

We asked future young architects to tell us what they thought were the main benefits of having an online presence. The results pretty much summed up why having a online portfolio is a must for future architects. Over 50% said having a online identity would help them engage with other architects as well as having an easily accessible online portfolio for people to view. Over 75% of them said the benefit of having an online identity would be to help them showcase their projects to improve their career opportunities.

Current state of young architects online presence.

When we looked at the current online presence of future young architects we found that just over 21% currently had a dedicated online presence to showcase their projects. Almost 40% were planning to launch one in the near future. With tools such as Squarespace and Wix currently available, making it easy for students to start an beautiful online presence quickly, we should start seeing many more website up shortly.

Building an online web presence and portfolio is clearly an important tool for the future young architects of the world. The survey results show that the majority of them are already plugged into the value of a web presence. With organizations like .ARCHI and the AIAS leading the charge, building tools and resources to give them that opportunity.
